Supporting New Measures to Combat Violence Against Women and Girls.
1st October, 2024
On 20 September, the Home Secretary announced a cross-government approach to tackling violence against women and girls.
This marks the first step in the government’s commitment to halving such violence over the next decade, ensuring victims of domestic abuse receive better protection from their perpetrators. Almost 100 domestic abuse related offences were recorded by the police every hour on average last year, an alarming statistic.
Introduced under Raneem’s Law, in memory of Reneem Oudeh and her mother Khaola Saleem who were murdered by Raneem’s ex-husband in 2018, these new measures include:
- Embedding domestic abuse specialists in emergency control rooms
- Improved response times
- Domestic abuse protection orders
- Enhanced police technology
- Education and prevention initiatives
The government plans to pilot these changes in targeted police forces from early 2025. From November, more perpetrators will be ordered to stay away from their victims and will face tougher sanctions if they fail to do so.
The introduction of Raneem’s Law and the pilot for new domestic abuse protection orders signal a pivotal shift in how society addresses domestic abuse. This will provide further protection for victims of domestic violence and it is crucial for all of us to support the measures being implemented as well as the victims of domestic violence.
Raising awareness, advocating for victims, and pushing for systemic changes will be vital in the collective effort to eradicate violence against women and girls.
