Video: Mental wellbeing and suicide prevention
12th September, 2022
The most recent figures confirm there were 6292 deaths by suicide in the UK in 2020.
Each one of these incidents will have had a devastating effect on the individual’s family, friends and colleagues, making the extent of those affected by these tragedies significantly more wide-ranging. We are hoping that this video will help people realise that this doesn’t have to be experienced in isolation.
We were joined by Claire Russell, Founder and CEO of Mental Health in Business, and a Suicide Prevention Educator and Advocate. Along with Jamie Gamble and Claire Hutchinson from our Employment Team together they discussed:
- How to recognise those who may be suffering from poor mental health, and in particular identify when a person may be at risk of suicide
- The importance of supporting individuals who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviours
- And explored the impact on those at work who are affected by the suicide of a colleague, friend or family member

We received a lot of questions over the course of the webinar and unfortunately we were unable to answer them all during the discussion, Claire has now written answers to all of the questions which can be downloaded here. Claire has also given us some very helpful supporting materials on the Myths & Facts of Suicide and useful contacts and resources with respect to suicide prevention.
Please do email Claire if you would like more information on promoting mental health at work or the training of mental health first aiders in your workplace.
Feel free to share any of these materials with anyone you think might find them useful.
If you have any other queries regarding training of your HR/people team or to discuss any other of your employment law needs do get in touch.
Please note that this briefing is designed to be informative, not advisory and represents our understanding of English law and practice as at the date indicated. We would always recommend that you should seek specific guidance on any particular legal issue.
